Advanced Backcountry Exploration and Ski Touring Tech

Ski touring in Val d'Isère and Tignes opens up access to pristine backcountry routes away from the tracked-out boundary lines. My specialized instruction focuses on teaching efficient skinning mechanics, pacing, quick kick-turns on steep slopes, and reliable route management. We explore classic local tracking options like touring through the Col de Fresse, scaling routes toward the Pointe de Sana, or exploring day loops near the edges of the Vanoise National Park.

If your technical goals include moving comfortably away from mechanical lift systems, this tailored instruction is built for you. Many clients search specifically for Terry Walker ski instructor or an independent Terry ski instructor framework to ensure they get high-level analysis from a professional BASI Assessor.

Frequently Asked Questions — Backcountry Touring

What specialized gear do I need to bring?

You will need dedicated ski touring pin/frame bindings, touring-specific boots with a walk mode, and form-fitted climbing skins for the base of your skis to permit uphill locomotion. If you need hyper-localized advice on where to rent or purchase advanced backcountry equipment sets, please get in touch with me directly prior to your arrival.

What level of physical fitness is required for touring?

If you can comfortably go for a gentle walk in the hills for an hour or two, your physical engine is perfectly prepared for my touring clinics. My intentional coaching philosophy aims to keep target heart rates low and efficient so that clients can deeply enjoy the high alpine mountain wilderness. However, if your goal is an intense cardiorespiratory workout, I can fully accommodate that pacing structure as well.

How do lunch stops work during full-day wilderness touring loops?

For full-day sessions, it is crucial that we organize a packed-lunch style food reserve inside our backpacks. Our tracking routes lead us deep into remote, unserviced terrain where alpine mountain restaurants do not exist. We will run through a dietary briefing during our WhatsApp checklist sync.

Where do we meet for morning or afternoon starts?

Standard sessions meet at either 9:00 AM or 1:00 PM directly under the large public clock and thermometer banner at the base of the main Solaise Télécabine in Val d'Isère. Alternate backcountry trailheads across Tignes can be integrated dynamically by request.
